We’ll be spending the first hour of the session walking through Google Analytics with some of our demo sites, showing how to master and improve your e-commerce performance. We’ll be spending the second hour talking about some advanced, yet very ethical (that is all we’ll ever discuss) SEO tactics to help your site rank better.  This session absolutely is not open to any competing firms, even though two of them actually tried to register for it (how hilarious is that?) I guess if you can’t beat them, you might as well learn from them. 

This morning, however, I came across a very cool result when searching for “Columbus SEO firm” on Google.  We’ve been number one for quite a while, but this one is pretty neat to check out, as you can see below…

This image shows that there are 4 companies paying to be listed on this page. I guess these are competitors in the field or something, but I’ve never heard of them before. I could click on their links to find out who exactly they are, which would require them to pay probably $3 or $4 each for my click.  But I’ll be nice and continue to not care enough to check them out.  Although someone should contact them and ask why they use pay per click if they are an SEO firm, since any good SEO company should never have to pay for advertising (full disclaimer – we’ve never paid a nickle for advertising, especially not Pay Per Click advertising).

But the cool thing on this page is that, on the organic search result for this query, we own 5 of the top 6 spots in some variation.  The top two results are both from this site, linking to a couple of pages having to do with us being a Columbus SEO firm.  The next result is my personal site, JoeRozsa.com, talking about my Columbus SEO company. The next spot is someone else, and then followed by the parent company of SEO Columbus, KaLor Technology.  Finally, the next result is our company profile on SEOmoz. 

Five out of the top six spots are owned by us. Considering how many people out there claim to know SEO (and geez, I’ve recently met some doozies, including one guy who runs a hosting company in Dayton who says to a client of mine that “it’s just putting a bunch of keywords on a page“).  Yea, that’s it…  good luck with that buddy. 

Anyway, our best marketing technique is sharing things like this with potential clients.  After all, do you want someone who claims they know how to get a site to rank on Google?  Or do you want someone who actually shows you that they know how?

You could pay to be ranked on Google, in what is called Pay Per Click using Google AdWords. You can be number one in no time. Unfortunately, when you do that, you are paying every single time someone clicks on those ads. Better hope they become a customer. If you’re a small business owner, you better also hope it isn’t one of your competitors. There may be nothing worse than paying to have your competition check out your web site. In the world of pay per click, it is very easy to burn through a lot of money very quickly, with very little to show for it. So what is the answer? How do some sites get so lucky that they rank at the top of Google without having to pay for each click?

Well, that isn’t luck. It is an art. And it is science. And you need to be very good at both the art and the science part if you want to be successful. One thing that it isn’t though, is luck. We rank #1 for just about every Columbus SEO phrase out there because we are the best at getting ranked for those phrases. Heck, we spent $0 on Pay per Click advertising. But if you haven’t noticed, Columbus golf course web sites aren’t very good.  Let’s just say that if you Google “best golf course in Columbus“, the first actual course site is in the #4 spot overall, and it is for a nice little course in Columbus. INDIANA.   I didn’t even know there was a Columbus, Indiana.  But seriously, you mean to tell me that there isn’t a SINGLE Central Ohio golf course site built with search engines in mind?  How much more business would be headed their way if they did?  TONS. 

Many of Columbus area golf sites are flat out terrible – even for the more notable and higher end courses and private clubs.  A lot of these sites are templates that they seem to get from other vendors or golf site specialists, and they probably overpaid for a poorly designed cookie cutter theme website that will never get any traffic because they don’t realize there is a Google penalty for duplicate sites and content.  But to the point, being an SEO guy myself, it drives me crazy that these sites are not very good at getting their Central Ohio golf course site ranked highly on Google.  

It got me thinking that I need to find a golf course client for SEO Columbus. 

I’m pretty certain that I could get pretty much any golf course in Central Ohio to rank #1 (or at least very high) for phrases such as “Columbus golf course”.  Actually, looking at the competition, I have zero doubt that I can dominate this space.  If I can rank #1 for Columbus SEO against a lot of people who also do SEO for a living, than I can certainly dominate the search engine rankings for a golf course.  

Of course, my company policy is to limit myself to one client per industry once I’m retained, so I can’t help everyone.  I would only be willing to take on one golf course client to avoid any conflict of interest that would arise. 

I would probably have to build them a new site, and I’d definitely have to work on an SEO campaign for them with a decent amount of effort.  But consider this a personal crusade. I’m a competitive person, in case you didn’t know.  When I set out to be #1 at something, I don’t stop until I get there.
